Description
The following areas will be covered during the course:
1: Introduction, group work assignment
2: Laws and regulations related to contamination of the environment
3: Risk based remediation
4: Contaminated environment in Finland common contaminants and causes of pollution
5: Contaminated sediments
6: Characterization of contaminated site, metal contamination
7: Remediation techniques in practice. Case studies
Collaborate with students and other course participants with varied experiences and perceptions and from different socio–economic, geopolitical and climatic zones through assignments and group works.
Learning outcomes
After the course, the student knows the contamination of soil, sediments and groundwater by metals, inorganic and organic chemicals. He/she is able to characterize the type of contamination and carry out a selection of remediation goals by risk based approach. The student is familiar with the legislation such as permitting process and guideline values for remediation. He/she knows the most common biological, chemical and physical remediation techniques.

The course material is produced in the 30th Jyväskylä Summer-School (modules 1-10). This follows the pattern of successful combination of simultaneous contact workshop/ seminar and creation of material for virtual courses.
