Description

The textbook offers basic knowledge of soils as a habitat, soil organisms, their biodiversity and role in decomposing process, as well as soils as a part of ecosystems. Microbial and animal groups living in soils are presented and their ecology is described. In addition, decomposition process of organic matter and methods to study soil animals are described in the book.

Learning outcomes

After completing this course, the student should be able to

· describe soils as a habitat.

· explain the diversity of soil organisms at different scales.

· describe characteristics and biodiversity of different soil living organism groups.

· tell the role of soil organisms in decomposing of organic matter and nutrient cycling.

explain how soil organisms are studied.

· BENA2031 (tai aiempi BENA2021).
