Description

Doctoral studies in the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences emphasize the ability to conduct independent research, the ability to complete and report an extensive research project, and the ability to present and defend the dissertation in the public defense. Society needs new scientific knowledge as well as academic experts. Doctoral education prepares doctoral candidates to be experts in the chosen field of research. In addition it provides them with skills of analytic thinking and problem-solving and builds up communication and information technology skills required in information society.

In a doctoral programme of the Department of Social Sciences and Philosophy, the specialisation may be cultural policy, development studies, philosophy, politics (political science), social work, sociology or social and public policy. The applicant must choose the specialisation when applying to the Doctoral Programme.

The Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree presupposes the postgraduate studies required in the syllabus as well as a dissertation.
The Doctor of Social Sciences (D.Soc.Sc.) degree presupposes the postgraduate studies required in the syllabus as well as a dissertation.

The licentiate degree (YTL) consists of a licentiate thesis and additional postgraduate studies.
