XYHI1000 Academic and Professional Communication (4 cr)
Description
CONTENT
This course aims to develop students’ language and communication skills for use in multicultural academic and professional environments. Themes of the course include adapting to the transition between academic and professional life, communicating appropriately in multicultural group work situations, and critical analysis and synthesis of research information in both written and spoken contexts. The course also focuses on deepening students’ knowledge of writing conventions in order to aid them in assessing and editing their own writing, and providing constructive feedback on their peers writing as well.
COMPLETION METHODS
Lectures, readings and assignments to be completed individually and in groups.
GRADING
Active participation in contact teaching, individual and group learning assignments to be completed according to the given instructions. Students are expected to demonstrate achievement of the set learning goals. More detailed assessment criteria will be discussed at the beginning of the course.
Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this course, students are expected to be able to:
- recognise the conventions and registers of language and communication needed in order to transition between academic and professional life.
- assess and edit their own writing, and provide constructive feedback to their peers in academic and professional contexts.
- synthesise and evaluate professional and research information both orally and in writing.
- display the ability to form and effectively communicate research-based arguments in interdisciplinary and multicultural contexts.
