Content

The aim is to practice receptive skills such as the understanding of routine everyday written and spoken texts (buying a train ticket, reading announcements). First and foremost the attention is focused on the strategies needed to manage in these situations.

Completion methods

The 24 contact hours will be spent learning to understand Finnish with the help of diverse exercises in groups, pairs and also individually. The course focuses mostly on practicing listening and reading comprehension, as well as on using Finnish in routine everyday situations. Completing home assignments is an important part of the course. The support language of the course is English.

Assessment details

Completion of the course requires attendance, active participation in discussions and completion of the assignments within the given schedule. At the end of the course there is an exam.

Learning outcomes

The course provides students with different strategies to understand Finnish, abilities to search for basic information in simple texts and cope with routine everyday situations in Finnish. The students will also acquire an understanding of the particularities of the Finnish language.

Additional information

Exchange students who stay in Finland only for one academic term. Upon completion of the Survival Finnish course, the students cannot directly progress onto Suomi 2.

Study materials

The course material consists of a reading pack and other material designed to accommodate the students’ particular needs. The pack can be purchased from the teacher.
