Content

This is a two-week intensive preparatory course organized in August. The aim of the course is to prepare students for studying their major through English at the University of Jyväskylä. We will activate, practice and improve listening, speaking, reading and writing skills in English at upper intermediate – advanced level. We will also discuss intercultural differences in academic conventions. Typical tasks include reading, discussions and evaluating information as well as writing a critical text and presenting and leading a discussion on a field-specific topic following academic conventions.

Completion methods

Contact teaching (40 hours) and independent study. Compulsory attendance.

Assessment details

ASSESSMENT: No final exam. Course evaluation is based on active participation in classroom activities and successful completion of course assignments.

Learning outcomes

By the end of the course, the students are expected to be able to:

- communicate and interact competently in both informal and formal situations
- demonstrate academic argumentation skills in both written and oral form
- present according to international academic conventions

PROFICIENCY LEVEL: B2-C1, upper-intermediate – advanced.
