Description

Content

In the Introduction to Laboratory Techniques course student learn basic chemical laboratory skills and methods. First year chemistry students take this course during their first autumn.

KEMA200 "Introduction to laboratory techniques" (Johdatus laboratoriotöihin) is available in English. Non-Finnish speaking students register for English speaking groups (Laboratory exercise). Exchange and other foreign students who have already completed laboratory course(s) at home university are advised to contact their research group or the departmental coordinator in order to agree on suitable introduction and training in working in a laboratory in Finland.

The course consists of lectures, webassignments, laboratory exercises, different exercises and writing laboratory reports.

The course contains following laboratory works: food chemistry reactions, preparation of ionic compound (inorganic synthesis), changing the pH of water with oxides and salts, chromatographic work, analytical work, synthesis of methyl salicylate (organic synthesis), reaction entalphy measurement, reaction order and reaction rate and complexometric titration.

Completion methods

The course consists of lectures, self-study material (10 h), pre-assignments, different exercises, laboratory exercises (40 h) in small groups, and written laboratory reports. Student need to attend and complete all laboratory exercises and other exercises given in the course.
