ENVS1123 Instrumental environmental analyses (5 cr)

Content
This is laboratory course in which students learn pretreatment of environmental samples (extraction methods) and how to use high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), gas chromatography (GC-FID and GC-MS), spectrophotometer and stable isotope mass spectrometer (SIRMS). In the course student learn how to identify organic compounds from chromatogram. Students keeps recods on their lab work by writing learning diary. In the course, student extracts organic compounds from given environmental samples and determine what kind of organic compounds their sample includes. Student prepare report of given sample and represent it to whole group after two weeks of working in laboratory.
Completion methods
Two weeks intensive course, which after own work is presented to whole group.
Assessment details
Assessment is based on working in laboratory (25%), learning diary (25%), written report and presentation from given samples (50%).

Working in the laboratory will be done in pairs.
