Content
The course covers a number of areas (e.g. punctuation, article use, tenses, relative and conditional clauses and text cohesion), focusing on issues within them that pose problems for students of English.
Completion methods
Lectures based on course material, participation in classroom work and discussion, analyzing language structure in various texts individually and in groups. A placement test is held at the beginning of the course, students with high enough scores do not need to attend the course.
Open University: contact teaching, web-based tasks, learning assignments, an exam or a combination of these (methods of study will be specified in the annual teaching programme before the start of each academic year).
Assessment details
Tutorials (83% attendance required): Grading on the scale from 0 to 5, based on course work (40%) and an exam (60%).
Open University: Active participation (100% attendance usually required). Learning assignments or an exam.
Learning outcomes
o be able to use English more accurately in speech and writing
o be able to identify and learn what’s behind common grammar problems in English in order to avoid them
o have a better understanding of the conventions of English in practice, such as punctuation and word choice
