Content

The growing impact of the digital gaming industry, the diversification of games into new genres and increasing number of players around the world calls for research and discussion of the potentials that digital games have for language education. This course explores how digital games can be applied and used to enhance L2 learning and teaching. It presents a theoretical framework for discussing research in this area and introduces perspectives for applying knowledge of games in designing materials and lesson plans. The participants will explore how different aspects of games and gaming can be utilized in language teaching English as a second/foreign language.

Learning outcomes

After completing this course the student will be able to
- show an understanding of the main directions of research and practice focusing on digital games and technology-enhanced language learning and teaching
- discuss different aspects that influence the potential of games for learning, including features of game design, genre features, play activity, gaming discourses and communities
- analyse and compare specific games and their potential for classroom use
- demonstrate how selected games may be used to meet specific language learning objectives

The students participating in contact teaching are expected to attend 80 % of the classes. If you are unable to attend due to illness or other acceptable reason, please let the teacher know in advance.
