Description
Content
This course is an introduction to basic studies in biological and environmental science, which deals with key themes of the field mainly from a global perspective. The main topics are a scientific way of thinking, energy flow, atmospheric phenomena, climate and climate change, photosynthesis, biogeochemical cycles and biomes.
Completion methods
Compulsory attendance at group discussions, and successful completion of the assignments and final exam.
Assessment details
Exam. Successful completion of the assignments raises rating by one notch.
Learning outcomes
After the course the student knows what our current understanding of a prerequisite of life on Earth is basing on. He/She is able to describe the most important energy flows and biogeochemical cycles at the global level and to identify the main differences between biomes. The student is also able to explain the main Earth's atmospheric and climate-related phenomena. He/She can also identify causes and consequences of climate change. In addition, after the course the student possesses main teamwork skills, such as acting as a chairman and secretary.
