Faculty of Mathematics and Science
2017-2018, 2018-2019, 2019-2020
The course will take a view on biological matter from the materials perspective. Nature is the architect for some of the hardest, softest, most brilliant and even self-healing materials. We will explore different classes of materials from silk proteins over chitin and calcium minerals in shells and bones up to the intricate glass structures in radiolarians and diatoms. The secret of their superb mechanical and optical properties can be found in their nanostructure composition, in which many different materials are combined intimately. Nanoscientists, chemists, physicists, biologists as well as engineers may find in this topic many interdisciplinary connections between their disciplines.
Attendance in lectures, preparing for quiz.
The participants will see how biological materials can be understood in an interdisciplinary way combining approaches from biology, chemistry, physics and engineering. They obtain knowledge about the structure and mechanical and optical properties of selected biomaterials.
