Study level:
Advanced studies
Grading scale:
0-5
Language:
English, Finnish
Responsible organisation:
Department of Chemistry
Curriculum periods:
2017-2018, 2018-2019, 2019-2020

Description

Content

Structure and properties of metal surfaces and nanoparticles, binding of adsorbates on surfaces and simple catalytic reactions reactions, variation of reactivity from one metal to the other, kinetics of surfaces reactions, heterogeneous catalysis, experimental and theoretical tools

Completion methods

The course will be lectured in English if needed. Lectures will take place in the first period of the spring semester on odd-numbered years. To complete the lecture course a student needs to complete exercises, laboratory work, a presentation and an essay. At another time, a student can pass the course by taking a book exam.

Assessment details

In a lecture course grading is based on a weighted sum of exercises, laboratory work, a presentation, and an essay. Each partial performance must be passed.

fail: < 50 % of the maximum points
grade 1 = 50 % of the maximum points
grade 2 = 60 % of the maximum points
grade 3 = 70 % of the maximum points
grade 4 = 80 % of the maximum points
grade 5 = 87 % of the maximum points.

Learning outcomes

A student who has passed the course has a more profound understanding of properties and reactivity of metal surfaces and nanoparticles. She/he is familiar with various experimental and theoretical tools and methods to address catalytic properties of metals surfaces and nanoparticles and knows to what kind of problems they can be applied to. She/he is also able to derive a rate equation for a simple surface reaction. In addition, she/he is familiar with major future challenges in heterogeneous catalysis.
