Description

Content

The most common structural methods for characterization of inorganic and organometallic compounds will be presented (apart from X-ray diffraction techniques). Main portion of the course will deal with multinuclear NMR and ESR spectroscopies and X-ray fluorescence technique. Basic principles of other common characterization tools such as X-ray absorption (EXAFS, XANES), Photoelectron and Mössbauer spectroscopies, and magnetic measurements will also be briefly highlighted.

Completion methods

When lectures are given: active participation on lectures, exercises and final exam. Academic years when lectures are not given: course can be completed by a book exam (contact the lecturers)

Assessment details

Evaluation based on final exam, 50% of the total points required to pass the course.

Learning outcomes

After completion of the course, the student:
• will have a basic knowledge on the most common structural methods used in the characterization of inorganic and organometallic compounds,
• understands the limitations of these characterization tools, and knows how to utilize (through critical thinking) the structural information obtained with the methods,
• knows how to interpret multinuclear NMR- and ESR spectra,
• understands the basic principles, prerequisites, limitations and applicability of the characterization methods.

Additional information

New course that will be lectured once every two years and will be organized for the first time in 2018-19 (fall 2018).

Description of prerequisites

Basic knowledge on NMR spectroscopy is recommended.
