The dissertation is an independent, research-based, scientific study carried out in one of the Faculty’s subjects. For more information on dissertation requirements, see instructions on the Faculty website.

Completion methods

Independent work / written assignment.
A study intended as a dissertation can be written in Finnish, Swedish, English, French, German or Russian, or another language approved by the Faculty.

Assessment details

Pass requires a dissertation that is approved by the Faculty Council. Assessment: fail - sufficient - satisfactory - good - very good - excellent (0–5).

Learning outcomes

The doctoral student
-knows the different phases of research process and can operate appropriately during them
-is able to limit the research topic and construct a clear research setting
-can position his/her study in the field of research.
-is familiar with the central theories, concepts and sources of the special field and is able to use them appropriately
-is proficient with the methods and practices of material collection
-is able to argument and present his/her research results clearly and coherently
-is able to assess the reliability and significance of his/her research results
-is proficient with the conventions of scientific writing and presentation.
