Description

Content

A charged particle in electric and magnetic fields, Lorentz force; linear ion optics, transfer matrices; real space and phase space (emittance, Twiss formalism); cyclotron components (magnet, acceleration electrodes, injection and extraction)

Completion methods

Demonstrations, examination

Assessment details

Participation in the course events is a requirement for passing the course. The final grade is based on the examination.

Learning outcomes

At the end of this course, students will be able to distinguish between the operation principles of classical cyclotron, synchrocyclotron and isochronous cyclotron as well as determine particle beam properties using transfer matrices.

Additional information

Given on spring semester 2nd period, every two years starting spring 2019.

Description of prerequisites

Students enrolling for the course are expected to be able to demonstrate skills and knowledge listed in the learning objectives for courses Introduction to Mechanics (FYSP1010), Introduction to Electricity (FYSP1030) and Introduction to Electromagnetism (FYSP1040).
