Content

This course aims to instruct and give hands-on experience to advanced level students in teaching and tutoring beginning writers in English. If you have taken Academic Writing or equivalent, you have the required background for the course. You will tutor your own Academic Writing students or Language Centre students in order to learn about feedback as a process and about yourself as a feedback giver. Tutoring will consist of providing consultation and feedback for tutees on the drafts of their assignments. The course offers experience that is directly relevant to teachers in classrooms and adult education.

Completion methods

Classes will consist of presentations (by the teacher and students) and discussion of issues related to writing pedagogy and feedback giving. Work outside class will mainly consist of working with tutees, as well as a review of source literature and a final report on the tutoring experience.

Assessment details

Active participation in class (83% attendance). A final course paper based on the work with the tutees. A presentation and annotated bibliography reviewing source literature on tutoring writing.

Learning outcomes

The course aims to instruct and give hands-on experience to advanced level students in teaching and tutoring beginning writers in English. After completing the course students will be able to:

- apply their knowledge of English academic writing practices to tutoring novice writers
- have a better understanding of teaching writing
- understand the processes involved in giving feedback
- give appropriate feedback

Description of prerequisites

EKIP102 Academic Writing or equivalent completed in Basic Studies; preferably you have also completed the BA Thesis Seminar; a minimum of one year must have elapsed from doing EKIP102 Academic Writing.

Study materials

Reading on the course will consist of students' own review of source literature on a tutoring writing issue.
