Description
Content
Conceptual frameworks and methods for studying discourse and interaction in a variety of working life contexts. These include ethnography, conversation analysis, critical discourse analysis and multimodal analysis. Topics also include English as a lingua franca, professional identities and communities, and digital discourse.
Completion methods
Contact teaching: course diary, project work (workplace visit)

Independent study: course diary, written assignments, project work (workplace visit)
Assessment details
- preparation for classes and active participation in class discussion
- active contribution to group work
- ability to complete coursework in the given time frame
- quality of oral and written coursework output
- ability to critically reflect on and apply the content provided in the course

Learning outcomes
- understand key concepts in the study of discourse and interaction and apply them to texts, talk and digital communication in selected professional contexts
- differentiate between and discuss key theoretical and methodological approaches in the study of discourse and interaction
- use appropriate concepts and methods in analyzing discourse and interaction in the context of working life
- observe and describe discourse practices at selected workplaces

Course materials and a list of readings are provided in Optima. The students participating in contact teaching are expected to attend at least 80 % of the classes.
