Content
This is a step further to the departmental introductory courses on Language Learning and Teaching targeted at future teachers of English and issues addressed from the perspective of the Finnish school system where feasible.
Completion methods
Weekly readings and tasks, pair and group work, presentation in class. 83 % attendance
Open University: contact teaching, web-based tasks, learning assignments, an exam or a combination of these (methods of study will be specified in the annual teaching programme before the start of each academic year).
Assessment details
Active participation in and out-of class, course paper
Open University: Active participation (100% attendance usually required). Learning assignments or an exam.
Learning outcomes
- understand the differences and similarities in first and second language acquisition
- discuss critically current views on English learning and teaching in the larger framework of SLA research over time
- understand how a teacher can and should take into account learners’ individual differences (and how these differences affect language learning outcomes)
-describe language learning in different contexts considering the global role of English
- understand various dimensions of knowing English and describe the different starting points of language assessment as well as apply standard rating scales in assessing different language skills.
Additional information
Compulsory course for teacher trainees, majors and minors; second or third year students.
Minors who do not wish to participate in the group, have an alternative way of completing the course by taking a take home exam on Hummel's book.
Description of prerequisites
* KLSP004 Johdatus kieleen ja sen tutkimukseen and
* KLSP005 / KOPP1000 Kohti kielenopettajuutta.
It is recommended (though not obligatory) that also KLSA124 / KOPA1000 Johdatusta kielen oppimisen ja opettamisen tutkimukseen is completed before this course.
