Content

In this course the students will familiarise themselves with the skills and knowledge expected of multidisciplinary language experts from two perspectives: scientific knowledge and working life relevance. The aim is the get to know the field of discourse studies and to understand what a multidisciplinary language expert knows and how the knowledge and skills are relevant in working life. The students will also start compiling their e-portfolios; this work will be contined in the course MONA1001 Multidisciplinary Language Expertise. The portfolio work will consist of compiling a working portfolio including descriptions of knowledge, skills and interests and putting together a presentation portfolio including the student's key skills and career goals.

Learning outcomes

After completing the course the student
• understands what are the skills of a multidisciplinary language expert
• knows what kind of fields and tasks are relevant to multidisciplinary language experts in working life
• understands the relevance of scientific knowledge and perspective in the construction of discourse skills and language expertise
• understands language use and variation as part of social and cultural practices
• can observe linguistic choices and their conditions and outcomes from the perspective of discourse studies
• can create a portfolio to describe her/his knowledge, skills and preliminary career goals
• in the portfolio, can reflect on her/his interests, strengths and developmental goals in relation to her/his study plan as well as working life relevance

Additional information

In each academic year, there are two deadlines for the self-study package in English, one in the fall term and another in the spring term, check the teaching schedule.
