Solving many-body Schrödinger equation using stochastic methods; Variational Monte Carlo (VMC) method; Diffusion Monte Carlo (DMC) method; Path Integral Monte Carlo (PIMC) method.

Learning outcomes

At the end of this course, students will be able to calculate the properties of a system described by a wave function using Variational Monte Carlo as well as calculate the ground state properties of bosonic systems using Diffusion Monte Carlo. Students will be able to explain the mathematical and algorithmic principles of solving fermion system ground state properties. They can also calculate the finite temperature properties of simple bosonic systems using PIMC.

Additional information

Given on autumn semester 2nd period, every two years starting autumn 2018.

Description of prerequisites

Students must be able to apply bra-ket-notation and distinguish bosons and fermions wave functions.
