Content
-central concepts related to multilingualism and categorizations of languages, consequences of multilingualism to individuals and societies, esp. in relation to language education.
-today’s linguistic environments from the point of view of language learning and teaching, especially considering the role of English as a lingua franca,
- multilingualismshows in an English as a foreign language classroom especially in Finland
- carrying out a small scale study on one of the aspects discussed in the course.

Methods of study: Readings, participation in class work, own small research project in pairs/groups of three or four

Active participation in class, presentation and final paper.
Learning outcomes
After completing the course students will be able to
- explain the central concepts related to multilingualism and categorizations of languages,
- reflect on the consequences of multilingualism to individuals and societies, esp. in relation to language education,
-understand and reflect upon today’s linguistic environments from the point of view of language learning and teaching, especially considering the role of English as a lingua franca,
- discuss how multilingualism shows in an English as a foreign language classroom in Finland, and
- carry out a small scale study on one of the aspects discussed in the course.
