Description

Content

Digital maps and geographic information in general. Basic principles of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and their use in analyzing geographic information, remote sensing datasets and other spatial data. Examples of applications of GIS. Global Navigation Support Systems (GNSSs), and differential correction methods. A short introduction to spatial statistics methods, including spatial autocorrelation and spatial interpolation. A few computer applications are introduced on the course, including ArcGIS and QGIS.

Completion methods

Active participation to course exercises, and an exam.

Assessment details

Exam 90%, exercises 10%.

Learning outcomes

After passing the course, the students should be able to describe how geographic information systems (GIS) store geographic information, and what kind of coordinate systems and map projections are commonly used. The student should know the principles of global positioning system (GPS) and the differential correction related to it. The students should know how geographic information can be analyzed and presented as maps in GIS programs such as ArcGIS. The students should know some most common geographic information analysis methods, and be able to describe how these methods can be applied to solving research problems. The students should know the basic terms of spatial statistics, and be able to describe some basic spatial analysis methods.
